You have probably been there at some point, sitting at your desk and contorting yourself into various positions because a muscle is tight. Perhaps you’re sprawled out on your foam roller in the middle of the living room, praying for some relief, while your dog is sticking its giant nose in your face. A study conducted by Toshihiro Maemichi and a team of researchers from medical and sports research centers across Japan focused on the effect of low-frequency acupuncture on muscle and fascial stiffness. The researchers wanted to understand whether electroacupuncture, a form of acupuncture that passes low-frequency electrical currents between the needles, could physically alter muscle and fascial stiffness.
Their findings suggest the answer may be yes. Researchers observed measurable reductions in tissue stiffness and improvements in mobility following treatment.
Looking Beneath the Surface
To answer their question, the researchers recruited twelve healthy adults and used a technology called shear wave elastography, a specialized form of ultrasound capable of measuring the stiffness of muscles and connective tissue.
Participants received low-frequency electroacupuncture in one leg for fifteen minutes. Researchers measured changes in muscle stiffness, fascial stiffness, and ankle mobility before treatment, immediately afterward, and again fifteen minutes later.
Rather than simply asking participants how they felt, the researchers focused on objective measurements of tissues themselves.
The Results
Following treatment, researchers observed measurable reductions in stiffness throughout multiple layers of muscle and fascia. Some of the largest changes occurred in deeper tissues, suggesting electroacupuncture may influence structures that are difficult to reach through surface-level interventions alone.
Additionally, participants demonstrated improved ankle mobility following treatment, indicating that the reduction in stiffness may also translate into meaningful improvements in movement.
