Clearing the Air: The Truth About Chiropractic Care

Mentioning you have a chiropractic appointment is a quick way to split a room right down the middle. For every person who swears an adjustment saved their back, someone else will give you a warning or pass along a scary rumor they read online.  It’s confusing, especially when all you want is relief from pain - not to get caught in a medical turf war. So why does chiropractic care get so much skepticism, and how do you know what to trust?

That’s exactly what spine surgeon Dr. Antonio Webb and chiropractor Dr. Korey Rose dove into on The WebbMD Podcast. Instead of pointing fingers, they sat down to address exactly why controversy has always followed the field. The truth is that a lot of the backlash comes from old history, a previous lack of standard rules, and flashy internet videos that seem to make doctors nervous. By putting a surgeon and a chiropractor at the same table, the conversation clears away the folklore to show what modern, collaborative care can really look like.

Leaving the 19th Century Behind

One of the wildest rumors still floating around is the idea that chiropractic care is a religion or a cult. Dr. Rose laughs this one off, pointing out that no chiropractic office operates as a nonprofit church.  This rumor traces all the way back to the late 1800s, when chiropractic was first founded on a more spiritual philosophy called “vitalism.” But just like mainstream medicine, chiropractic has grown up, with today’s best practitioners being grounded in science, not mysticism.

When a chiropractor talks about a subluxation, they don’t mean a spiritual blockage; rather, a subluxation simply means a vertebra has lost its normal, healthy alignment. When a spinal segment is misaligned, it alters the data traveling to your brain, causing the surrounding muscles to tense up in a painful spasm. An adjustment just restores that alignment so your body can relax.

The Great Profession Clashes

For a long time, healthcare providers have unfairly criticized each other, which only builds distrust for patients looking for help. Chiropractors often see the failures of back surgeries, while surgeons end up treating the patients that chiropractic care couldn’t fix. This cycle means everyone gets a skewed perspective, and patients often feel stuck in the middle.

Surgeons often worry that a chiropractor will try to treat a complex surgical emergency on a chiropractic table. This is why a good provider relies on a strict screening process to spot red flags that need immediate medical attention, according to Dr. Rose. If a patient shows up with progressive muscle weakness, an uncoordinated stride, or a loss of bowel and bladder control, a responsible chiropractor would never touch their spine and instead, refer them to immediate emergency medical care. True professionals know their boundaries and recognize exactly when conservative care ends and a surgeon needs to step in.

A big part of the skepticism around chiropractic care comes from what people expect it to do and why they need it in the first place. Dr. Rose explains that our daily lives set us up for spine trouble, with hours spent sitting at desks, TV nights slouched on the couch, and that familiar hunch over our phones, slowly taking a toll on posture and alignment. So, when that nagging pain finally gets bad enough, people often hope a single adjustment will be a magic fix. But when years of tension and poor habits don’t disappear overnight, disappointment sets in and the old rumors resurface.

It’s this cycle - years of damage, a rush for quick results, and frustration when healing takes time - that feeds so many of the doubts, horror stories, and viral myths about chiropractors. Real change isn’t instant, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible with the right care and honest expectations.
