There was a time when the idea of a chiropractor serving as the chief medical officer for Team USA at the Olympic Games would have seemed unimaginable. But that time has passed, and the story of how it happened is a pretty interesting one. Dr. William Moreau spent decades helping shape sports medicine at the highest level, eventually serving as chief medical officer for Team USA at both the Rio and PyeongChang Olympic Games. Along the way, he watched chiropractic evolve from a profession many sporting organizations viewed with skepticism into one that’s become an established part of multidisciplinary healthcare teams caring for some of the world’s most elite athletes. A New Perspective That shift didn’t happen because chiropractic changed overnight. It happened because sports medicine did. Many people associate sports medicine with the bad and the ugly. Carrying an injured player off the field on a stretcher and formulating phases of returning to play. And it’s true, for years, sports medicine was largely centered around diagnosing injuries and helping athletes recover. But today, it's just as focused on keeping athletes healthy enough to avoid injuries in the first place. That means bringing together professionals from many different disciplines, each offering their own expertise to support performance, recovery, and long-term health. According to Dr. Moreau, physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, nutritionists, psychologists, and many other specialists all have a role to play. The goal isn't for one provider to do everything. It's for the right people to work together to give athletes the best care possible. Where Chiropractic Found Its Place As sports medicine became more collaborative, chiropractors found new opportunities to contribute. Early in his career, chiropractors working with elite athletes was highly uncommon. But today, Doctors of Chiropractic routinely serve professional teams, collegiate athletic programs, and Olympic athletes around the world. So, what changed? In Dr. Moreau's view, much of that evolution came from the athletes themselves. They increasingly sought more conservative, evidence-guided care and wanted chiropractors included as part of their healthcare teams. Over time, that demand helped reshape how chiropractic was viewed within elite sports medicine. The Work Continues For Dr. Moreau, earning a seat at the table isn't the end of the story. He points to concussion care as one of the profession's greatest opportunities moving forward. Rather than viewing concussion as a condition with a single solution, sports medicine is recognizing that recovery may involve many interconnected systems, including the neck, balance, vision, and the autonomic nervous system. As research continues to evolve, Dr. Moreau believes chiropractors with advanced training can play an important role alongside other healthcare professionals in caring for individuals with persistent concussion symptoms. It's another example of how chiropractic continues to grow in this domain. Why Does This Matter? Most of us will never compete in the Olympics. But understanding how chiropractic became part of Olympic healthcare tells us something much bigger than who treats elite athletes. Healthcare at the highest levels of sport isn't built around tradition or personal opinion. Every decision is scrutinized. Every provider is expected to collaborate as part of a coordinated team. Earning a place on that team isn't automatic, it has to be earned. Dr. Moreau's career reflects that evolution. Over the course of several decades, he watched chiropractic move from the sidelines into an integrated role within one of the world's most collaborative healthcare environments. According to him, that shift wasn't driven by marketing or professional lobbying. It was driven by athletes who continued asking for chiropractic care and healthcare teams that recognized the value of including it. If you've ever wondered why so many professional and Olympic athletes choose to include chiropractors as part of their healthcare team, Dr. Moreau's story helps explain how the profession earned that trust. And here's the encouraging part: you don't have to be an Olympian to explore that same kind of care.
